Fire Safety Finder lists 23 firms connected with York in North and East Yorkshire, of which 16 have a York postcode or name the city in their address. Six firms say they carry out fire risk assessments, 14 offer fire alarm installation, and 12 offer fire alarm servicing. Nine firms say they hold third-party certification, eight state BAFE registration, and four state NSI approval. Premises types firms say they cover include offices (6), industrial and warehouse premises (5), schools and educational sites (4), healthcare premises (4), flats and common parts (3), and HMOs (2).
Fire safety in York's workplaces and the common parts of residential buildings is enforced by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, which has been overseen since May 2024 by the York and North Yorkshire Mayor. For rented homes and HMOs, the relevant authority is City of York Council. York runs additional HMO licensing in eight wards, including Clifton, Micklegate, and Hull Road, where HMOs with three or four occupants from more than one household need a licence until 31 March 2028.
There is no single prescribed qualification required, but the responsible person must appoint someone competent. Six firms listed on Fire Safety Finder for York say they carry out fire risk assessments, and nine firms state third-party certification. Since 1 October 2023, under the Building Safety Act 2022, the responsible person must record the whole fire risk assessment and who carried it out.

For HMOs, Grade A systems should be serviced six-monthly under contract, while Grade D systems should be serviced annually.
