Fire Safety Finder lists eight firms connected to Thirsk in North and East Yorkshire. Four of those firms offer fire risk assessments, seven offer fire alarm installation, and six offer fire alarm servicing. Four firms appear in a Thirsk postcode or name the town in their address. Three firms say they hold third-party certification, two say they are BAFE-registered, and two say they are NSI-certified. Premises types that firms state they cover include HMOs, offices, schools, industrial and warehouse premises, healthcare settings, and one firm states it covers heritage-listed buildings.
Fire safety in business premises and the common parts of residential buildings is enforced by North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, which has been overseen since May 2024 by the York and North Yorkshire Mayor. Responsibility for fire safety in rented homes and HMOs sits with North Yorkshire Council. Selective licensing in the council area applies only to privately rented homes in two parts of Scarborough (Scarborough South and Scarborough Town); elsewhere, only mandatory HMO licensing applies.

Large HMOs with five or more people from two or more households require a mandatory licence from North Yorkshire Council everywhere in England. Selective licensing in the council area covers only privately rented homes in two parts of Scarborough (Scarborough South and Scarborough Town); it does not apply to Thirsk.
