Fire Safety Finder lists 14 firms connected to Harrogate, of which 11 are based in a Harrogate postcode or name the town in their address. Seven say they carry out fire risk assessments, and nine offer both fire alarm installation and servicing. Among the premises types firms say they cover are offices (six firms), industrial and warehouse premises (three), hospitality venues (three), schools and educational buildings (three), care homes (two), and flats and common parts (two). Five firms say they are BAFE-registered and three say they are NSI-certified.
Fire safety in business premises and the common parts of residential buildings is enforced by North Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service, which has been overseen since May 2024 by the York and North Yorkshire Mayor. For rented homes and houses in multiple occupation, responsibility sits with North Yorkshire Council. Mandatory HMO licensing applies across England to larger HMOs. Selective licensing in the North Yorkshire Council area currently covers only privately rented homes in two parts of Scarborough; it does not extend to Harrogate.
Any competent person may carry out a fire risk assessment, but seven firms listed on Fire Safety Finder say they offer this service in the Harrogate area. Five of those firms say they are third-party certified, with five stating BAFE registration and three stating NSI certification. Since 1 October 2023, the responsible person must record the whole fire risk assessment and who carried it out, under the Building Safety Act 2022 section 156.
